Johnny Carson Uncovered to Converse Swahili Following ‘Tonight Show’ Retirement

Soon after late-night host Johnny Carson retired from The Tonight Display in 1992, he stayed busy touring the earth by plane and yacht. And though he all but disappeared from the general public eye, he was seemingly still a communicator and an entertainer at heart. To put together for a vacation to Africa, the television icon learned to talk Swahili. But was he in a position to impress the locals?

An Esquire writer wrote in 2002: “Herewith, I will attest, to behold Johnny Carson discuss Swahili is a remarkable factor. He has regaled me with dizzying waves of it and evidently swells with glee whilst doing so.”
